DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE HOTEL RESERVATION SYSTEM (A CASE STUDY OF AFIKOSTAST HOTEL)



CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The relevance of computer and its application in society cannot be overemphasized. The impact computers have is evident in hotels booking system. Computer booking systems (CBS) have brought a lot of efficiency in hotel operations.
There is a need for an efficient and reliable information system to aid the traveller in planning their vacation. Shelter is one of the basic necessities of life, individuals need a place to stay at all times, these individuals could be a business men who travel from one place to another in the course of their business or students who school away from their homes.
Professionals travel out of their domain in other to achieve certain aims and objectives such as tourism. The word “Hotel” comes to mind when one thinks of short term accommodation.
A hotel can simply be defined as a building or a place where the guest can receive room and stay for short period of time, also a place of refreshment entertainment and protection of the visitors Rewinde, (2010).

In many states or countries however a hotel/motel is defined based on its status. Hotel and other accommodation are as diverse as many family and business travellers they accommodate.
Establishments vary greatly in size and in the services they provided. Hotels and motels make up a great percentage of establishments and tend to provide more services than mere lodging.
Most hotels and motels are commercials properties that cater mainly to business people, tourism and other travellers who need accommodation for a brief stay.
A small but growing number of luxury hotels also manage condominium in addition to their transaction rooms; provide both hotel guest and condominium owners with access to the same service amenities.  
Hotels booking and management activities in ‘Antiloslast Hotel’ for instance, range from issuance of tickets to payment of stipulated fees complete and return the tickets according to the type of room a customer requires. Such information is then sent to the various units in the hotel for processing.
1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The manual method of hotel management is associated with the following challenges.
1.     The Manual system is time consuming and too much labour is required before the booking list is finally released.
2.     There are cases of loss of the ticket as a result of mishandling.
3.     Redundancy of records in cases where the customer may wish to purchase more tickets for other customers.
1.3  AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The specific objectives of this study are as follows:
i.                   To develop a system that enhances easy retrieval and storage of data and information of customers to make hotel reservation online.
ii.                 The system will improve information management through the elimination of data redundancy.
1.4   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The design and implementation of the online hotel reservation system will improve the operational efficiency of ‘Afitostast hotel’ with respect to handling of data/information. The system will also, if implemented Eliminate cases of redundant data associated with the manual system being used in ‘Afikostast hotel’.
