CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1Introduction
Over the years, computer
has grown from the basis of thermionic valves which is a bulky and high power
consuming systems to the miniaturized microprocessor-based computer which is
more portable. This led to easy acquisition of computer system has resulted to
which talked about “Computer Age”.
Almost all human
activities cannot be effectively and efficiently done without the computer being
applied or mentioned in the course of action.
Computer has proven to be
the symbol of efficiency. It has come to stay and must be effectively and
constructively implemented. Computers are now used in medical diagnosis,
guiding and controlling of aircrafts, cost effectiveness of complicated
systems, project and decision making in management of information system,
mailing system etc.
Computers ahs found its
way into the education system thereby making complicated and tedious business
of information handling and management. These advantages of computer to play a
vital role in the Academic Sector, Hostel Reservation of a tertiary institution
like Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Oweri. (A Web-Based hostel reservation system,
a case study of Jombo Hostel , Federal Polytechnic Nekede).
The manual of preparing or
Reserving Hostels or rooms to students were sometimes in-efficient,
in-accurate, slow and unreliable as it goes with human labor, which is
characterized by high level of mistakes and misplacements.
This project is aimed at
eliminating the improper management and Reservation of rooms in the hostel. It
is also aimed at proper Reservation of rooms and ensure that the required
equipments needed by the students are present in the hostel.
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Federal
Polytechnic Nekede, is a Federal Polytechnic located in a town called Nekede,
Nekede is located near the city of Owerri. Federal Polytechnic has five (5)
schools and twenty five (25) departments.
JOMBO HOSTEL
is a boy’s hostel in Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Imo State. Its rooms
are many, big, well furnished and can contain or accommodate a huge number of
students. As the number of students that enroll in Federal Polytechnic Nekede
increases the number of students applying for accommodation also increased.
At a time in
the hostel accommodation reservation, so many undesired issues came up
necessitated the design and implementation of a hostel accommodation
reservation system. This project aims at converting manual processed in the
existing system to automated to improve speed of operation, provide more
facilities and more especially to overcome all the challenges encountered.
1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The growing number of
students in higher institutions precisely Federal Polytechnic Nekede has posed
a lot of accommodation problems on the part of students and the school
management.
Students at the beginning
of each session waste half of the semester looking for accommodation. The few
hostels that exist in the polytechnic
are not properly managed. Statistics of the number of rooms required to
match the growing number of students are far-fetched.
Most often, students pay
hostel fee and end up not getting one due to lack of bed space. Hostel administrators cannot give accurate
information of the occupancy of a particular room.
These and many more forms
the statement of the problem that necessitated this research work.
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This project is designed
to help in the management of hostel Reservation in the Polytechnic. The main
objective of the new system includes the following:
1. Design
and develop a central database system that would serve as a hostel data-base,
which will contain information on all the available rooms in the hostel.
2. Design
a Computer-driven hostel Reservation system for reserving hostel rooms for
students
3. To
generate reports on hostel occupancy.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The research will be
carried out or will cover among other things:
1. Hostel
Rooms Registration
2. Hostel
Rooms Information Management
3. Hostel
Reservation
The research will be
carried out using Federal Polytechnic Nekede (Jombo Hostel as a case study).
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF
THE STUDY
The new system designed
for computer-driven student’s host Reservation will among other things:
1. Facilitate
timely reservation of hostel rooms for students.
2. Check
the hostel occupancy at any time for information management.
3. Have
first hand information on the statistics of students in the hostel.
4. Enable
management to plan on improving hostel living condition.
5. Sum
up the total amount of money realized from hostel fee each session.
1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
Some of the constraints encountered during this
project design include the following:
1. Financial Constraints:
The design was achieved but not without some financial involvements. One had to
pay for cyber computer time. Also the typing and playing of the work has its
own financial involvements.
2. High Programming
Technique: the programming aspect of this project
posed a lot of problematic bids that took some days to solve. Problems such as
database connections using Visual Basic and database (access) posed a lot of
challenges.
3. Few Literature Sources:
the topic though seems to be a common term. It is not a popular topic to surf
from the internet. It had fewer Literature Sources.
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Hostel – a condition that a
solution to an optimization problem must satisfy.
